POL 112 - American National Government

The course will cover the formation and development of the U.S. national government, its politics, organization, powers, and citizenship practices using basic political science methodology. We will analyze fundamental ideals, institutions, and outcomes of the American national government to assess the health of American democracy and citizenship. Topics include the founding era, federalism, separation of powers, civil rights and civil liberties, elections, voting, political participation, interest groups, political parties, the media, Congress, the courts, the president, and public opinion. Students will learn about American politics, use theoretical frameworks to explain political phenomena, consider alternative interpretations of political processes, and examine the influence of cultural diversity on contemporary political issues. Furthermore, students will explore the role of values in decision-making in resolving political conflicts and controversies.  Offered annually.
