First Year Experience

Mission

The Office of First-Year Experience works diligently to successfully orientate and retain first time freshman students through academic advising, course seminar instruction, and relevant, collaborative co-curricular activities.

Vision

The First-Year Experience Program is staffed by a team of Student Success Coaches who execute intrusive academic advising throughout the academic year to ensure that first-year students are adequately informed about graduation requirements such as the General Education/Core Curriculum, course sequencing and placement, and academic program matriculation requirements. Additionally, our team develops course schedules for students during the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters in preparation for the upcoming semester.

The Student Success Seminar courses are conducted twice per week- Monday and Wednesday- for fifty minutes per session. These courses are led by our Student Success Coaches. The course curriculum focuses on four major areas: History and Legacy of the Institution, Financial Literacy, Effective Learning Strategies, and Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility.

Special Requirements

Student Success Seminar is a required course for all first-year students and transfer students. Transfer students who do not transfer 60 or more credit hours or have not completed two comparable seminar courses at a prior institution are required to complete both success seminar courses. Students must enroll in SSS 101, and SSS 102 respectively during the semester entered or offered.

**Note:  Students who complete an Associate Degree program at Tougaloo College are not required to take SSS 102, however; the student must complete the credit hours to earn the bachelor’s degree.
