HIS 134 is a survey course that covers the history of peoples of African descent in the United States from the African background to the Civil War years. The course includes an examination of the African background, the transatlantic slave trade, life in Colonial America, the New Republic, the Antebellum years, the experiences of Free African Americans, the Anti-Slavery Movement, and the Civil War years. This course provides a foundational understanding of the early historical experiences of African Americans. This course is offered once per year.
