3 Semester Hour(s)

African American Politics explores the political experiences, strategies, and contributions of African Americans within the American political system. Emphasis is placed on the historical and contemporary struggle for civil rights, voting rights, political representation, and policy influence. Students will examine the development of Black political thought, the role of grassroots movements, Black elected officials, and institutions such as the Congressional Black Caucus. The course also interrogates the impact of systemic racism and structural inequality on Black political agency, while highlighting ongoing efforts toward empowerment and transformative justice.  Offered annually.
