The School of Education, Supervision, and Instruction at Tougaloo College prepares educators through a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs leading to P-6 and 7-12 initial teacher licensure and certification in child development, elementary and secondary education, physical education, and other degrees and certifications in other areas such as gifted education, health education, child development association (CDA), Pre-K-Kindergarten, and reading. In addition, the School of Education offers a Master of Arts degree in Child Development and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees in Elementary Education (grades 4-6) and Secondary Education (grades 7-12).
Accreditation
The School of Education, Supervision, and Instruction programs are Mississippi Educator Preparation Provider Accredited (MEPPA) programs by the state’s Mississippi Department of Education and regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Beginning Spring 2025, the College’s School of Education will seek national accreditation through Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
As a state-approved educator preparation provider (EPP), Tougaloo College’s School of Education will adhere to rules, regulations, and guidelines as required by the Mississippi Department of Education. Conceptual Framework
The School of Education’s Conceptual Framework is based on the College’s and School’s missions and research-based theories and best practices. Developed collaboratively with students, faculty, administration, the teacher education advisory council (TEAC), and the professional community, the READ Scholar Conceptual Framework depicts educator preparation provider (EPP) expectations for teacher candidates by focusing on the learner and learning, content and pedagogy, field and clinical partnerships and practices, candidate progression and support, program impact, professional responsibility, and quality assurance and continuous improvement through ongoing assessments, evaluations, and feedback.

A READ scholar is one who
- is committed to continuous improvement in practice (reflective)
- develops the thinking skills for effective inquiry (effective)
- assumes responsibility for his or her own learning (active)
- demonstrates awareness of self, others, and the surrounding context and takes action that aligns with new understandings (decisive)
Tougaloo College is a private, liberal arts, historically black college; therefore, the School of Education advocates for traditional educational practices and well-rounded, cross-disciplinary programs of study by advocating for the integration of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching practices, best approaches for implementing innovative technology, diversity and inclusivity, and advocacy for social justice - all practices which foster innovative and scholarly research-based approaches for students to become READ scholars, able to work in schools and communities with diverse populations in an ever-changing cultural and global society that requires today’s educators and community leaders to be caring, nurturing, and highly knowledgeable in their fields of study.

The School of Education collaborates with the Schools of Humanities, and Natural Sciences to offer the following Bachelor of Arts degrees:
Bachelor of Arts in Biology Education (Grades 7-12)
Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry Education (Grades 7-12)
Bachelor of Arts in Physics (Grades 7-12)
In addition to their required major courses, students pursuing educator licensure in Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Music Education, and Physic Education are required to take and successfully pass the following courses with a grade “C” or above. EDU 252 , EDU 217 , EDR 312 , EDU 336 , and EDU 424 or EDU 436 .

Additional Approved Endorsement/Certificate Program Areas
The School of Education, Supervision, and Instruction is approved to offer many elementary and secondary education endorsements for educator licensure through the Mississippi Department of Education. Supplemental licensure endorsements may be added with coursework having a prefix in the specific endorsement area (completed coursework must bear an earned grade of “C” or higher). Courses bearing the appropriate prefixes below may be counted toward an add-on endorsement in the licensure areas provided by the Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Educator Licensure. A minimum of eighteen (18) coursework credit hours will be required to add the endorsement of interest. Please note that education methods courses may not be counted toward obtaining a supplemental endorsement. Additionally, remedial courses (also referred to as compensatory, developmental, or basic skills) will not be recognized for licensure purposes and are usually numbered below 100 on the transcript. Acceptable coursework must be submitted on an official transcript from a regionally/ nationally accredited institution of higher education. NOTE: When the Mississippi Department of Education’s Board of Education approves changes to licensure-track programs, the School of Education adheres to those changes. The School of Education updates students on a regular basis using the College’s learning management system (LMS).
